As a kid I was always fascinated by kaleidoscopes. The simple mechanism of a tube and mirrors creating prisms and offering colors only God can create amazed me. As I grew older I became fascinated with my hair. The curls and cools flipping and twisting on itself almost like the prisms. Almost like the patterns of a cluster of butterflies. A kaleidoscope.

Encouraging the Black women in my community to embrace themselves with the same love they do with the people they encounter everyday.

Encouraging the Black women in my community to embrace themselves with the same love they do with the people they encounter everyday.

This piece; like all of my works, are reflections of how I view the people in my community. So much of Black culture is rooted in innovation, determination and resilience as a means of surviving trauma. By portraying the polylithic nature of Black people with vibrant colors, restful expressions, and sympathetic activities my work acknowledges the duality of how life is experienced as a Black person.

There is an energy in everyone that connects them to a higher power. I truly believe that wherever that power stems from is what allows us to focus on finding and achieving our purposes in life. This drawing is my adaptation of an image created by Benjamin Lieber or Model Chavist Hill. Generate was created during an Artist Residency with Fusion Intl in Japan.

People shouldn’t feel the need to apologize for being themselves. If being you makes others uncomfortable that isn’t your business or your responsibility to solve. Block Out the Noise is about having the confidence to listen to and trust yourself first. I created it while reflecting on a time in my life when I first made the decision to be happy regardless of my surroundings and to not apologize for it. Block Out the Noise was created during an Artist Residency with Fusion Intl in Japan.

When someone is getting closer to their goals it can feel as though a weight has been lifted off of their shoulders. But many fail to mention in their testimonies how the transition from self-doubt to self-awareness isn’t always easy. Remember to be kind and patient with yourself. Introspection was created during an Artist Residency with Fusion Intl in Japan.

The city of Newark, NJ is nicknamed Brick City which is a material that is versatile in the way its used and resilient against many natural and unnatural offensenses. Newarks history shows how resilient the city and it’s people are — much of which is captured and remembered through the arts. This collage pays homage to the rich history and the beautiful future of Newark.
